----  Training Course for Chemical Management Policy  ----

Once a year from 2005 to 2009 in Tokyo area, NITE (the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation, Japan) is conducting a two-week group training course for chemical management policy with 10 participants from 10 developing countries. It is commissioned by JICA (the Japan International Cooperation Agency) in collaboration with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan.
This training course is aimed at executive officers who have been engaging in planning and enforcement of chemical management systems in their central governments. The course is intended to encourage the participants to develop their action plans for chemical management policies in their respective countries, and after returning to their home countries, they are expected to discuss and propose improvement plans based on the action plans and also to apply such improvement plans to operations in their organizations.
Accordingly, NITE has been developing and improving the course program with the following objectives:

- To promote understanding of Japanese regulatory systems for chemical management including prior evaluation systems, and voluntary management activities by industries in relation to them;
- To promote understanding of the control procedures that cover the processes from post-manufacture to disposal of chemical substances, such as anti-pollution measures, waste management measures and recycling measures;
- Acquisition of knowledge and information which are necessary for participants, as policy makers, to design chemical management systems in their own countries. E.g. chemical hazard forms, exposure modes, types of evaluation, compendium of risk-management and so on; and
- To promote understanding of current international trends in chemical management.
