Risk Assessment of Chemical SubstancesIn an effort to ensure sound economic and industrial activity while protecting human health and the environment, the Chemical Management Center (CMC) provides the technical and information infrastructure necessary to support the development and implementation of chemical risk assessments.
1. Risk Assessment under the Chemical Substances Control LawCMC is currently working to develop guidelines for the scientific and objective risk assessment of chemicals designated as "monitoring chemical substances" under the Chemical Substances Control Law. By categorizing chemical application information and developing emissions factors for chemical substances, CMC is developing methods for estimating chemical emissions from each stage of the manufacturing process and use of the substance. 2. Initial Risk AssessmentCMC has developed "Initial Risk Assessment" methods for the chemical substances designated by the PRTR law. Using these methods, human and environmental exposures are estimated with PRTR data and environmental monitoring data. CMC completed risk assessments of 150 chemical substances and published the series, "Initial Risk Assessment Reports for Chemical Substances," and other related information. 3. Risk Assessment of Consumer ExposureCMC develops chronic health hazard risk assessment methods for repeated exposure to consumer products and gathers information necessary for consumer exposure assessments such as information on human behavior patterns. CMC published guidance and estimation tools for risk assessments of consumer products including "Guidance on a Consumer Product Risk Assessment for GHS Labelling" and "The Program for Estimating Human Exposure Used in the Risk Assessment of Consumer Products." 4. Risk Assessment related InformationCMC publishes risk assessment reports and other relevant information about its various risk assessment activities. 5. Risk Assessment Demonstration Tools for Chemical SubstancesIn this system, using data from the Initial Risk Assessment Reports, the risk assessments of chemicals are demonstrated.
