- | - | [Rationale for the Classification] Based on (1) to (3), classification was not possible since there was no information on effects of mating on fertility nor developmental effects of exposure during gestation, although there were reports of hazardous effects on the reproductive organs. [Reference Data, etc.] (1) In a 14-week inhalation exposure test with rats and mice, at 100 mg/m3, effects on male and female reproductive organs (decreased weights of testes/epididymis, presence of degenerating cells from testicular germinal epithelium within seminiferous tubules/epididymis (rats), ovarian and uterine atrophy and longer estrous cycles (mainly mice)) were observed, but the effects on female reproductive organs (markedly in mice) were caused at doses at which deaths occurred and were considered as secondary effects (CLH Report (2009), ECHA RAC Opinion (2010), NTP TR499 (2001)). (2) In a test with male hamsters in which an exposure by intratracheal instillation (3 mg/kg, twice/week, 8 weeks) was followed by an 88-week observation, effects on male reproductive organs (decreased weight of testes and epididymis, decreased sperm count, histopathologic alterations of the seminiferous tubules) were observed at the end of exposure and also at weeks 16 and 64 after the last exposure. The effects tended to reverse at the end of the observation period (after 88 weeks) (CLH Report (2009), ECHA RAC Opinion (2010)). (3) In a toxicokinetic experiment with rats by repeated inhalation exposure to this substance, evidence of indium accumulation in testes was observed (CLH Report (2009), ECHA RAC Opinion (2010)). (4) In the EU, it was classified in Repr. 2 (EU CLP Classification Results (Accessed Oct. 2021)). |
