It was classified in Category 3 (narcotic effects) because toxic signs of sedation and ataxia were reported in an acute oral toxicity test with rats (LD50: 1,610-1,670 mg/kg) (USEPA/HPV (2001)). Besides, in an 11-day diet administration test with dogs, signs of gait abnormality, blepharoptosis, and decreased body temperature were observed at 454 mg/kg/day during the treatment period, and it was concluded this substance had some effects on the central nervous system (USEPA/HPV (2001)).

In a 24-month diet administration test with rats (doses: 0, 30, 100, 300 and 1,000 ppm), microcytic anemia with the elevation of phospholipid and cholesterol levels occurred, presumably as secondary effects of liver disorders at or above 300 ppm (15 mg/kg/day) corresponding to the guidance value range for Category 2, and histopathological changes of swelling, focal necrosis, and vacuolization of liver cells were observed (USEPA/HPV (2001)). Therefore, it was classified in Category 2 (liver). Besides, also in an 11-day diet administration test with dogs, increases in GOT, GPT, and ALP, which indicate deterioration of liver function, were found in the high dose group (1,000 ppm = 50 mg/kg/day) (USEPA/HPV (2001)).
