Rationale for the classification
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Category 4

Warning
H302 P301+P312
P264
P270
P330
P501
In an acute toxicity test with rats, there were no dead animals in either males or females after administration of 500 mg/kg, one out of five animals died in both males and females after administration of 1,000 mg/kg, and all of five males and 4/5 females died after administration of 2,000 mg/kg (JECDB (Access on Aug. 2012)). Therefore, an LD50 value was estimated to be 1,000-2,000 mg/kg, and it was classified in Category 4.
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Not classified
-
-
- - It was classified as "Not classified" based on an LD50 value of > 3,000 mg/kg for rats (IUCLID (2000)).
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable
-
-
- - Solid (GHS definition)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available.

P501
It is reported that it was moderately irritating in a test in which 20 mg of this substance was applied to the rabbit skin for 24 hours (IUCLID (2000), RTECS (1997)), but it was classified in Category 1 from the knowledge that the pH of an aqueous solution (100 g/L) of this substance was less than 1 (IUCLID (2000)).
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 1

Danger
H318 P305+P351+P338
P280
P310
It was classified in Category 1 because it is reported that it was highly irritating in a test in which 20 mg of this substance was applied to the rabbit eye (IUCLID (2000), RTECS (1997)), and there is the knowledge that the pH of an aqueous solution (100 g/L) of this substance was less than 1 (IUCLID (2000)).
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available.
4 Skin sensitization Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - The classification is not possible due to no in vivo test data. Besides, as for in vitro tests, both positive (JECDB (Access on Aug. 2012)) and negative (IUCLID (2000)) results were obtained in Ames tests (OECD TG 471, 472, GLP), and there is a report on a negative result in a chromosomal aberration test with CHL cells (OECD TG 473, GLP) (JECDB (Access on Aug. 2012)).
6 Carcinogenicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available.
7 Reproductive toxicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - In a combined repeated dose toxicity study with the reproduction/developmental toxicity screening test with rats (OECD TG 422; GLP), in the high dose group (700 mg/kg/day), parent animals showed toxic signs (such as wheezing, abdominal distention, emaciation, and decreased spontaneous movement), reduced weight gain, and decreased food consumption, and two females died or were killed in a moribund condition. At the dose, no effects of treatment of the test substance were observed in reproductive parameters such as estrous cycle, copulation index, fertility index, gestation length, gestation index, the number of corpus lutea, implantation index, delivery index, and as effects on pups, tendencies toward low body weights in males and females and toward low viability on day 4 were found, but there were no treatment-related effects on developmental parameters such as the number of live borns, the number of stillborn, live birth index, sex ratio, or no pups with external anomalies (JECDB (Access on Aug. 2012)). From the above results, no adverse effects were observed on sexual function and fertility, but as for effects on the development of offspring, there are no data on examination of fetuses before deliveries, therefore it was classified as "Classification not possible" due to lack of data.
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available.
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible
-
-
- - In a combined repeated dose toxicity study with the reproduction/developmental toxicity screening test with rats (OECD TG 422; GLP), the groups at or above 350 mg/kg (converted guidance value: about 175 mg/kg/day) showed hyperplasia of mucosa at the limiting ridge and atrophy of mucosa in the cardiac region in the stomach, and the 700 mg/kg dose group (converted guidance value: about 350 mg/kg/day) showed erosion and superficial hemorrhage in the glandular stomach, wheezing, soft feces, abdominal distention, etc. And there were reduced weight gain, decreased food consumption, and changes in some blood or blood chemistry tests in males, one female died, and one female was killed in a moribund condition (JECDB (Access on Aug. 2012)). From the above, because the doses where effects were observed exceeded the upper limit of the guidance value range, and the stomach findings were judged as local effects of oral administration (because this substance is corrosive/irritating), they were not used for classification. Therefore, it is estimated to correspond to "Not classified" in oral administration. However, because of no information on the other routes, it was classified as "Classification not possible" for specific target organ toxicity (repeated exposure).
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available.

Rationale for the classification
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Acute) Not classified
-
-
- - It was classified as "Not classified" from 72-hour EC50 = 120 mg/L for algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata), 48-hour EC50 = 130 mg/L for crustacea (Daphnia magna), and 96-hour LC50 > 100 mg/L for fish (Oryzias latipes) (Results of Aquatic Toxicity Tests of Chemicals conducted by Environment Agency in Japan (Environment Agency, 1997)).
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Long-term) Not classified
-
-
- - If chronic toxicity data are used, then it is classified as "Not classified" due to being not rapidly degradable (not readily degradable, BOD 3% (Biodegradation and Bioconcentration Results of Existing Chemical Substances under the Chemical Substances Control Law, 2000)), and 21-day NOEC = 17 mg/L for crustacea (Daphnia magna) (Results of Aquatic Toxicity Tests of Chemicals conducted by Environment Agency in Japan (Environment Agency, 1997)).
If acute toxicity data are used for a trophic level for which chronic toxicity data are not obtained, then it is classified as "Not classified" because it corresponds to "Not classified" for both crustacea and fish in acute toxicity, and it is not water-insoluble (water solubility = about 500 mg/L, NITE 2012). From the above results, it was classified as "Not classified."
12 Hazardous to the ozone layer Classification not possible
-
-
- - This substance is not listed in the Annexes to the Montreal Protocol.
