5 | Germ cell mutagenicity | Category 2 |
Warning |

P201 P202 P280 P405 P501 |
It was classified in Category 2 from positive results in a chromosomal aberration test and a micronucleus test both with bone marrow after intraperitoneal administration to Chinese hamsters (in vivo somatic cell mutagenicity tests) (IARC 32 (1983)). Other than these, as in vivo somatic cell genotoxicity tests, there are reports on positive results in a sister chromatid exchange test with bone marrow after intraperitoneal administration to Chinese hamsters (IARC 32 (1983)), a DNA adduct formation test with the rat lung, and a DNA binding test with the mouse skin (EHC 202 (1998)). On the other hand, as for in vitro tests, mostly positive results were obtained in Ames tests (EHC 202 (1998), IARC 32 (1983)) and gene mutation tests with mouse lymphoma cells (NTP DB (Access on Oct. 2011)). Besides, there is a report on a positive result in a chromosomal aberration test with oocytes after oral administration to mice (in vivo germ cell mutagenicity test) (IARC 32 (1983)), but it was not used for classification because its reliability and validity are unknown. |
6 | Carcinogenicity | Category 2 |
Warning |
H351 |
P308+P313
P201 P202 P280 P405 P501 |
It was classified in Category 2 because IARC classified it in Group 2B (IARC 92 (2010)). Besides, it was classified in A2 by ACGIH (ACGIH (2001)), B2 by EPA (IRIS (1997)), and R by NTP (NTP RoC (12th, 2011)). Furthermore, in a test by intraperitoneal administration to mice, increases in lung and liver tumors were reported (IARC 92 (2010)). This substance is a relatively weak carcinogen compared to its alkyl derivatives or benzo[a]pyrene, but it acts as an initiator in tumor production in the mouse skin (ACGIH (2001)). |
7 | Reproductive toxicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Data are lacking. Besides, it is described that subcutaneous injection of 5 mg/rat daily to two rats from the first day of pregnancy resulted in fetal death and resorption (IARC 32 (1983)). |

9 | Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure | Classification not possible |

10 | Aspiration hazard | Classification not possible |

11 | Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Acute) | Category 1 |
Warning |
H400 |
P273
P391 P501 |
It was classified in Category 1 from 3.7-day LC50 = 0.0018 mg/L for fish (Pimephales promelas) and 1.96-day LC50 = 0.0018 mg/L for crustacea (Daphnia magna) (both EHC, 1998). |
11 | Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Long-term) | Category 1 |
Warning |
H410 |
P273
P391 P501 |
Reliable chronic toxicity data were not obtained. It was classified in Category 1 because it is not rapidly degradable (BIOWIN), and it was classified in Category 1 in acute toxicity. |
12 | Hazardous to the ozone layer | Classification not possible |

- | - | This substance is not listed in the Annexes to the Montreal Protocol. |
