5 | Germ cell mutagenicity | Category 2 | Warning | H341: Suspected of causing genetic defects |
P308+P313: IF exposed or concerned: Get medical advice/attention. P201: Obtain special instructions before use. P202: Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood. P281: Use personal protective equipment as required. P405: Store locked up. P501: Dispose of contents/container to ... |
No data from in vivo mutagenicity tests are available. The substance is a water insoluble cadmium compound. However, it cannot be excluded that the substance can exert genotoxic effects in consideration of germ cell mutagenicity potential suggested with cadmium chloride, a representative water soluble cadmium compound. Therefore, the substance was classified into Category 2. As relevant information, from in vitro mutagenicity tests, there is a report of a positive chromosomal aberration test using human lymphocytes (IARC 58 (1993). Refer also to cadmium chloride (CAS: 10108-64-2).
6 | Carcinogenicity | Category 1A | Danger | H350: May cause cancer |
P308+P313: IF exposed or concerned: Get medical advice/attention. P201: Obtain special instructions before use. P202: Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood. P281: Use personal protective equipment as required. P405: Store locked up. P501: Dispose of contents/container to ... |
Since cadmium and cadmium compounds are classified into "Group 1" in IARC (IARC 58 (1993)), "K" in NTP (NTP Roc (11th, 2004)), and into Category 1 in Japan Society For Occupational Health (JSOH), the substance was classified into Category 1A.
7 | Reproductive toxicity | Category 2 | Warning | H361: Suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child |
There is no available data for the substance. However, for cadmium chloride, a representative cadmium compound, developmental toxicity is suggested. Therefore, the substance was classified into Category 2 since the possibility of developmental toxicity of the substance cannot be ruled out. Refer also to cadmium chloride (CAS: 10108-64-2).
8 | Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure | Category 1 (respiratory system, digestive system) | Danger | H370: Causes damage to organs (respiratory system, digestive system) |

P270: Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product. P321: Specific treatment (see ... on this label). P405: Store locked up. P501: Dispose of contents/container to ... |
No data for the substance is available. However, as acute effects of cadmium compounds to humans, "chemical pneumonitis and oedema after inhalation exposure, and rapid onset with severe nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain after ingestion" are characteristic symptoms (EHC 134 (1992)). Based on the data, the substance was classified into Category 1 (respiratory system, alimentary system).
9 | Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure | Category 1 (respiratory system, kidney, bone) | Danger | H372: Cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure (respiratory system, kidney, bone) |
P260: Do not breathe dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray. P264: Wash ... thoroughly after handling. P270: Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product. P314: Get medical advice/attention if you feel unwell. P501: Dispose of contents/container to ... |
For humans, there is a report that in a cadmium sulfide dye manufacturing factory, improvement of working condition resulted in a marked reduction in worker urine beta2-microglobulin levels (EHC 134 (1992)). In mice and hamsters, exposure to the substance (0.09 microg/L, 19h/day, 5 days/week, for 26 weeks) caused dose-dependent histopathological alterations, including proliferative and hyperplastic lesions in the respiratory tract (CaPSAR (1994)). Based on the data, target organs were considered to be bone and respiratory system. The effects on animals were observed at dose levels within the guidance value range for Category 1. In addition, as chronic effects of cadmium compounds to humans, "emphysema, renal dysfunction such as glomerular proteinuria, hypercalciuria, disturbances in rate of calcium to phosphate, hypophosphataemia, formation of renal stones, osteomalacia and osteoporosis" are characteristic (EHC 134 (1992)). Based on the information, the substance was classified into Category 1 (respiratory system, kidney, bone).
