HEALTH HAZARDS
Hazard class Classification Symbol Signal word Hazard statement Precautionary statement Rationale for the classification
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Classification not possible - - - - Classification not possible due to lack of data. As relevant information, all 10 animals died at 5000 mg/kg (PATTY (5th, 2001)).
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable - - - - Liquid (GHS definition)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
2 Skin corrosion/irritation Classification not possible - - - - No data available. For health hazards, refer also to 1,4-diethylbenzene (CAS 105-05-5).
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 2 Warning H319: Causes serious eye irritation P305+P351+P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
P337+P313: If eye irritation persists: Get medical advice/attention.
P264: Wash ... thoroughly after handling.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
Diethylbenzene tested by drop on a rabbit eye caused transient symptoms of irritation, but no injury was detected by fluorescein staining (HSDB (2003)). Additionally, it was reported that men exposed to 1000 ppm experienced eye irritation which rapidly diminished in intensity on continued exposure and a concentration of 2000 ppm caused immediately severe eye irritation, lacrimation (HSDB (2003)), and there is a report that diethylbenzene is an eye irritant (HSDB (2003)). Based on these information, the substance was classified into Category 2. [Data for diethylbenzene was used as the basis of classification on the assumption that there are only minor differences between isomers.]
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
4 Skin sensitization Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Classification not possible - - - - No data available. For health hazards, refer also to the information of 1,4-diethylbenzene (CAS 105-05-5).
6 Carcinogenicity Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
7 Reproductive toxicity Classification not possible - - - - No data available. Refer also to the information of 1,4-diethylbenzene (CAS 105-05-5).
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Classification not possible - - - - Although there is a report that slight hemorrhage and dystrophic change were observed in the liver, gastric mucosa, duodenum, spleen and kidney following oral application of isomer mixture to rats (PATTY (5th, 2001)), classification was not possible due to lack of data for the substance itself rather than isomer mixture. For health hazards, refer also to the information of 1,4-diethylbenzene (CAS 105-05-5).
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible - - - - No data available. For health hazards, refer also to the information of 1,2-diethylbenzene (CAS 135-01-3) and 1,4-diethylbenzene (CAS 105-05-5).
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible - - - - Although the substance is a hydrocarbon, classification was not possible since the kinematic viscosity at 40 degC was unknown.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
Hazard class Classification Symbol Signal word Hazard statement Precautionary statement Rationale for the classification
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Acute) Category 2 - - H401: Toxic to aquatic life P273: Avoid release to the environment.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Classified into Category 2 from its 96h-LC50 = 4.15 mg/L for fish (Fathead minnow) (AQUIRE, 2010; HSDB, 2003).
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Long-term) Category 2 - H411: Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects P273: Avoid release to the environment.
P391: Collect spillage.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Classified into Category 2 since its acute toxicity is Category 2 and it is not rapidly degradable from BOD degradation rate = 0% at 4 weeks (Biodegradation and Bioconcentration of Existing Chemical Substances under the Chemical Substances Control Law, 1988).
