Based on a LC50 value of 1300 mg/m3/2h (316 ppmV/4h) for mice (PATTY (5th, 2001)), the substance was classified into Category 2. Since the test concentration was lower than 90% of saturated vapour pressure concentration (82,500 ppm), the classification criteria for gas was adopted.

Based on a result of "a severe skin irritant" in a skin primary irritation test with rabbits (PATTY (5th, 2001)), a result that the tails of mice dipped into undiluted test substance showed first signs of necrosis after 54 seconds and then it is corrosive to the skin and data of pH 12.9 (100 g/L, 20 degC) (GESTIS (access on Aug. 2009)), the substance was classified into Category 1.
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 1 Danger H318: Causes serious eye damage P305+P351+P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
P310: Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.
Based on report that undiluted substance or solutions containing a concentration greater than 20% caused opacity to the cornea and purulent conjunctivitis on rabbit eyes with the first signs of conjunctivitis noticeable following application of one drop of a 0.5% solution, a report of corrosive to the skin and a data of pH 12.9 (GESTIS (access on Aug. 2009)), the substance was classified into Category 1.

4 Skin sensitization Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Classification not possible - - - - Classification not possible due to lack of data from in vivo mutagenicity tests. From in vitro mutagenicity tests, there is report of a negative Salmonella typhimurium mutation assay (PATTY (5th, 2001)).
6 Carcinogenicity Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
7 Reproductive toxicity Classification not possible - - - - No data available.

There is a report that lethal oral doses in rats affected gastrointestinal mucosa and caused vascular disorders (PATTY (5th, 2001)). In a second report, increased respiratory rate prior to death, vomiting, side position, chemical burns to the gastric mucosa, bleeding of the mucous membranes, gastritis and thickening of the gastric wall were observed in rats and cats (GESTIS (access on Aug. 2009)). These findings by oral administration are considered to be local effects caused by a corrosive substance. Additionally, there are reports that inhalation exposures in mice resulted in irritation, excitement, and convulsions (PATTY (5th, 2001)) and that inhalation exposure in rats resulted in irritation, bronchitis, conjunctivitis, and possible liver and kidney injury (HSDB (2008)). From a rat oral LD50 value of 300 mg/kg and an inhalation LC50 value of 1.3 mg/L (PATTY (5th, 2001)), the toxic effects were observed at dose levels within the guidance value range for Category 1. Since the affected organ cannot be identified, the substance was classified into Category 1 (systemic toxicity).
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible - - - - An inhalation test with rats at 0.026 mg/L (within the guidance value range for Category 2) for 6 months resulted in increased excitability of the nervous system, decreased diuresis, and decreased hemoglobin (PATTY (5th, 2001)). An oral test with mice conducted for 1 year at 26.4 mg/kg/day (within the guidance value range for Category 2) reported that no clear findings were noted (GESTIS (access on Aug. 2009)). However, both tests were conducted at only one dose level, therefore they do not meet the requirements for a repeat dose exposure test. Classification was not possible due to lack of other data.
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
