Based on results of "corrosive" in tests with rabbits and guinea pigs (IUCLID (2000)) and information that its solution (5 g/L, 20 degC) has pH 12, the substance was classified into Category 1.
3 | Serious eye damage/eye irritation | Category 1 | Danger | H318: Causes serious eye damage |
P305+P351+P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection. P310: Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician. |
Based on results of "irritating" in more than one test with rabbits (IUCLID (2000)), information that its solution (5 g/L, 20 degC) has a pH 12, and the substance is corrosive to the skin, the substance was classified into Category 1.
4 | Respiratory sensitization | Classification not possible | - | - | - | - | No data available. |
4 | Skin sensitization | Classification not possible | - | - | - | - | Classification not possible due to lack of data. Although there are a report of "not sensitizing" in a guinea pig skin painting test (IUCLID (2000)), this test method is not approved by OECD and the details are not clear. |
5 | Germ cell mutagenicity | Classification not possible | - | - | - | - | Although dose dependent chromosome aberration was reported in 4-month inhalation rat bone marrow chromosome aberration test (in vivo somatic cell mutagenicity tests) (IUCLID (2000)), this test is invalid since the experimental procedure and documentation do not meet current requirement (IUCLID (2000)). Classification was not possible due to lack of other data from in vivo mutagenicity tests. As relevant information, from in vitro mutagenicity tests, there is a report of a negative Ames test (IUCLID (2000)). |
6 | Carcinogenicity | Classification not possible | - | - | - | - | No data available. |
7 | Reproductive toxicity | Classification not possible | - | - | - | - | No data available. |

P304+P340: IF INHALED: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing. P403+P233: Store in a well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly closed. P261: Avoid breathing dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray. P271: Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. P312: Call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician if you feel unwell. |
It is reported that the symptoms produced in acute oral toxicity tests with rats, mice, rabbits and guinea pigs are similar: weakness, tremor, salivation, gasping, and convulsions (PATTY (5th, 2001)). The similar symptoms were reported following dermal or inhalation exposure to rats or mice except that inhalation caused respiratory irritation. The oral LD50 values in these species ranged from 320 mg/kg to 620 mg/kg, the dermal LD50 value is 370 mg/kg, and the inhalation LC50 values ranged from 0.78 mg/L/4h to 1.34 mg/L/4h. Since significant toxic effects are produced at dose levels within the guidance value range for Category 2 by oral and dermal routes, and Category 1 by the inhalation route, the substance was classified into Category 1 (central nervous system). In addition, since inhalation caused respiratory irritation and it is a corrosive substance, the substance was classified into Category 3 (respiratory tract irritation).
9 | Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure | Classification not possible | - | - | - | - | Although it is reported that changes in cardiovascular system parameters and serum enzymes were observed at dose levels within the guidance value range for Category 2 in an inhalation test with rats and mice (IUCLID (2000)), this test was considered to be invalid since the experimental procedure and documentation did not meet current requirements (IUCLID (2000)). Therefore, classification was not possible due to lack of other test data. |
10 | Aspiration hazard | Classification not possible | - | - | - | - | No data available. |
