HEALTH HAZARDS
Hazard class Classification Symbol Signal word Hazard statement Precautionary statement Rationale for the classification
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Not classified - - - - Since its LD50 > 5000 mg/kg bw for rats (IUCLID (2000)), the substance was classified into "Not classified".
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Not classified - - - - Since its LD50 > 5000 mg/kg bw for rats (IUCLID (2000)), the substance was classified into "Not classified".
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable - - - - Solid (GHS definition)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Category 4 Warning H332: Harmful if inhaled P304+P340: IF INHALED: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing.
P261: Avoid breathing dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray.
P271: Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
P312: Call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician if you feel unwell.
Based on its rat LC50 = 1.25 mg/L (IUCLID (2000)), the substance should be classified into Category 4, and it is rated Xn; R20 in the EU classification (EU-Annex 1 (accessed in August 2008)), which is equivalent to Category 4. (Since the saturated vapour pressure concentration of the substance is 2.01E-006 mg/L, and the test concentration of 1.25 mg/L is above the saturated vapour pressure concentration, we determined that the substance was in a dust state.)
2 Skin corrosion/irritation Classification not possible - - - - In a test using rabbits, the substance was described to be slightly irritating (IUCLID (2000)). However, since there is no other sufficient data for determination, the substance was classified into "Classification not possible".
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 2A Warning H319: Causes serious eye irritation P305+P351+P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
P337+P313: If eye irritation persists: Get medical advice/attention.
P264: Wash ... thoroughly after handling.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
Since it is documented that in a test using rabbits, the substance was moderately irritating (IUCLID (2000)) and is rated as Xi; R36 in the EU classification, it was classified into Category 2A.
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
4 Skin sensitization Category 1 Warning H317: May cause an allergic skin reaction P302+P352: IF ON SKIN: Wash with plenty of soap and water.
P333+P313: If skin irritation or rash occurs: Get medical advice/attention.
P261: Avoid breathing dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray.
P272: Contaminated work clothing should not be allowed out of the workplace.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
P321: Specific treatment (see ... on this label).
P363: Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Since the substance was sensitizing in three kinds of tests (Maximization test, Draize test, and Open epicutaneous test) (IUCLID (2000)), and is rated Xi; R43 in the EU classification (EU-Annex 1 (accessed in August 2008)), it was classified into Category 1.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Classification not possible - - - - Since there are no available results of in vivo mutagenicity tests and no available results of in vitro mutagenicity tests with multiple indexes, classification is not possible.
6 Carcinogenicity Not classified - - - - Since it is described that in a two-year oral feed test using rats (males and females) and mice (males and females), its carcinogenicity was not observed (IUCLID (2000), HSDB (2003)), the substance was classified into "Not classified".
7 Reproductive toxicity Category 2 Warning H361: Suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child P308+P313: IF exposed or concerned: Get medical advice/attention.
P201: Obtain special instructions before use.
P202: Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood.
P281: Use personal protective equipment as required.
P405: Store locked up.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
In a three-generation study with oral administration (feeding) using rats, no effects on sexual functions or fertility of adult males and females were found (IUCLID (2000)). Also, it is documented that in a rat developmental toxicity test administered from the sixth to the 15th day of gestation by gavage (IUCLID (2000)) and in a rabbit developmental toxicity test administered from the sixth to the 18th day of gestation by gavage (IUCLID (2000)), no embryotoxic or teratogenic effects were observed. NOAELs for embryos and fetuses in the rabbit developmental toxicity test administered from the sixth to the 18th day of gestation by gavage were described, and they were intermediate doses. Since it was determined to have some effects, the substance was classified into Category 2.
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible - - - - Since there is no sufficient data for determination, the substance was classified into "Classification not possible".
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
